Pour out your soul
I have no idea when I created this bible journal page, as I forgot to date it, but I can still see what came to mind at the time. The passage is from 1 Samuel 1, and I’ve highlighted a few words with coloured pencil: “I have been pouring out my soul” in verse 15, “Go in peace” in verse 17, and “her face was no longer sad” in verse 18. I was struck by Hannah pouring out her soul to God, and that she went away in peace, her face no longer sad.
Having highlighted the verses that were standing out to me, I then covered other parts of the page with white gesso, covering the text and preparing the page for whatever I then decided to add. I wanted to represent the pouring out of the soul, which I did with the mouth. The mouth and rainbow coming from it have been coloured with pencil initially, but I found that to be too light and subtle, so I added gel pen to the mouth to make it bolder. I also wrote the words coming out of the mouth in gel pen too. I’m not a big fan of glitter, but I like the glittery gel pens here, they add something to the very gentle pencil colour. I’ve then added the words ‘Pour out your soul to God’ at the top of the page, and some lyrics from a worship song at the bottom of the page which I felt connected with the theme.
I like this bible journal page, it’s colourful and a great reminder to pour out your soul to God. It is also a reminder of the lesson I learnt about how coloured pencils don’t work too well over gesso!
