Armchair

a painting of a red armchair with a rounded back fills most of the space, with a little of a yellow background behind.

This was the first painting I did on canvas - a good number of years ago now! The image of an armchair had begun to resemble a place of prayer for me, a symbol of sitting comfortably in the lap of God the Father. A place of comfort, a place of safety. It’s an image that I would often bring to mind as I began to pray, to help remind myself that I was loved by God, and that prayer could be a relaxed and comfortable conversation, rather than a formal and restrained one.

As with so many of my paintings, it was created as a reminder. Although I probably don’t need the reminder much these days, it still hangs on the wall amongst others. The armchair still holds a place in my heart though and when I’m on retreat, I’ll often seek out a comfy arm chair that I can curl up in - sometimes to pray, sometimes to read, and sometimes to nap!
